Rest, Relaxation & Recuperation

Would you like to be immersed in a quiet, peaceful environment where the loudest sound is the breeze through the tress or the screech of a Bald Eagle overhead?  Do you enjoy the awe inspiring beauty of nature and/or its wildlife?  How about gazing on a sky full of stars so bright you will wonder how it could be dark.  The Tall Timber Lodge has all this and more.  It is a truly relaxing place surrounded by absolute beauty and total peacefulness.

Off-road & Winter Fun

Bring your ATV’s, 4x4’s, dirt bikes or mountain bikes if that's how you like to see the country or if you're visiting us in the wintertime bring your cross country skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles. We are only 500ft away from miles and miles of trails and back roads. If you like to downhill ski, the Cedar Pass Ski Hill is approximately 15 miles east of Alturas on Highway 299.

Deer Hunting, Bird Hunting and the Romero Ranch and Hunt Club

The home is located in the heart of the X3A deer zone and Eastern Shasta Elk zone. If you have drawn a tag for this area, please consider using the lodge as your “base camp”. If you hunt waterfowl, then you have heard of the world class goose and duck hunting this area has to offer. If you also enjoy hunting upland birds, not far away is the Romero Ranch and Hunt Club. Owned and operated by Rich Hamel, (also of Likely Place R.V. & Golf Course) Romero Ranch and Hunt Club operates from November 1st to April 15th by appointment only. They raise pheasants and chukkars. Give them a call to reserve your hunting date and time. Let them know how many birds you would like to hunt and when you arrive, that number of birds will be released and your hunt will begin! Fishing, Boating, Waterskiing

There are literally dozens of creeks and streams in the area affording the vacationer prime fishing opportunities. Also, included in your stay here is access to 2 fully stocked private trout ponds, so bring the kids and the poles and have fun. For lake fishing, Clear Lake, located in the wildlife area and Blue Lake at the south end of Jess Valley, are beautiful settings for a great day of fishing. West Valley Reservoir near the small town of Likely is also close and is popular for fishing, boating and water skiing. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day there!

Hiking & Backpacking

The South Warner Mountain Wilderness of the Modoc National Forest is located in the southeast section of the Warner Mountain Ranger District just southeast of Alturas. The South Warner Wilderness has breathtaking scenery and ample opportunities for hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing. It offers snowcapped peaks, mountain meadows, sparkling streams, trout fishing amid scenic grandeur, a profusion of colorful flowers and shrubs, and countless birds and small animals. Golfing, R.V.ing

For the golfer, Likely Place R.V. & Golf Course is just off Jess Valley Road near Likely. Play a few holes and have lunch in their club house. Spelunking & Exploration

This area is rich in historical and geological interests with several caves and lava tubes. The Lava Beds National Monument is about an hour or so away with many ice caves and is the historic battlegrounds of the Modoc War. The area has significant American Indian history and artifacts; rock and cave drawings can still be found.  See http://www.nps.gov/labe/

Winery Tours and Wine Tasting...

Stringers Wild Plum Orchard and Winery is located in Modoc County along Highway 395 Northeast of Alturas approximately 40 miles. In business now for more than 18 years, The Stringer Family harvests wild plums from their very own orchard in Modoc County used in the production of their award winning wines and delicious syrups, jams and preserves. Don't end your vacation without a tour of this amazing little winery.
